Richard Maas ’76 , M.D., died August 15, 2025, in Boston following complications from an extended illness. At Dartmouth he earned an A.B. in chemistry and was active in Marching Band and track and field and cross country. He went on to earn an M.D. and Ph.D. at Vanderbilt University, completed a residency in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), and finished postdoctoral training in the Harvard Medical School Department of Genetics. He joined the Harvard faculty in the newly formed BWH division of genetics, serving as chief from 1999 to 2021, and was appointed to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in 1989. During his 22-plus years as chief, Dick helped to grow BWH genetics from four faculty to more than 20 faculty at the rank of assistant professor or above, 250 staff, and $25 million in annual research expenditures. “His profound impact on his division, our department, and strengthening the bridge between genomic investigation and clinical care cannot be overstated,” says Dr. Bruce Levy, executive vice chair of BWH’s department of medicine. “Dick was a brilliant physician-scientist, a generous teacher and mentor, and an unfailingly supportive friend and colleague who was a tremendous force for good at BWH and in the world.” He was “a really wonderful physician with an inquisitive mind who cared deeply about his patients,” according to Harvard president Dr. Alan Garber, a fellow BHW resident in 1984. Dick is survived by his wife, Hao Wu; and children Gordon and Allison.
