Peter Melvin Fishbein ’55

Peter Melvin Fishbein ’55 died on September 25, 2025, at his home in Harrison, New York. Born in New York City on June 20, 1934, Pete came to Dartmouth from Mount Vernon High School and went on to Harvard Law School. Earning his J.D., he became a clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice William Brennan. During the Kennedy administration, Pete served as deputy secretary general of the International Peace Corps, which aimed to encourage other nations to create versions of the U.S. Peace Corps. In 1963 Pete joined the New York law firm Kaye Scholer, taking leaves of absence to work on Robert F. Kennedy’s successful 1964 U.S. Senate race in New York and his 1968 presidential campaign. In 1984 Pete became managing partner and accelerated the firm’s expansion in Asia and Europe. He retired in 2013. In addition to service on the board of the NYU Brennan Center for Justice, Pete donated time to White Plains Hospital, SUNY Purchase, and the I Have a Dream Foundation. He also taught at NYU Law School and Middlebury College. He was an Alumni Fund volunteer and class agent for many years. Pete was an accomplished athlete with a passion for tennis and paddle tennis and won tournaments at Beach Point Club, in Mamaroneck, New York. In summers Pete and his wife, Bette, retreated to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and traveled through Europe and Asia. He is survived by his wife, three sons, and seven grandchildren.
