Peter Cosby van Lent ’63 died on December 29, 2025, in the hospital at Potsdam, New York. He was born in Boston and attended Cohasset (Massachusetts) High School, where he was valedictorian and active in band, dramatics, newspaper, and yearbook. Peter majored in French at Dartmouth and was the president of Le Cercle Français and a brother of Phi Kappa Psi. He also participated in a foreign study program and the Episcopal Student Union. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in medieval studies and French language and literature at Stanford University. In 1966 he and Marjorie Stearns were married, a marriage which spanned 48 years. In 1970 Peter accepted a faculty position at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, where he spent 29 years teaching. His academic work covered courses in French, French-Canadian studies, African studies, and Native American studies. He inspired generations of students with his breadth of knowledge and thoughtful engagement with culture, language, and history. He was an animal lover, at various times raising sheep, goats, cattle, horses, donkeys, llamas, rabbits, chickens, geese, guinea fowls, and turkeys in addition to cats and dogs. Peter is survived by two children and five grandchildren.
