Louis V. Gerstner Jr. ’63 died in Jupiter, Florida, on December 27, 2025. At Dartmouth Lou majored in engineering sciences and was active as class treasurer, chair of the Undergraduate Judiciary Committee, a Kappa Sigma brother, a member of Casque & Gauntlet and Palaeopitus, and participated in the Newman Center. Post Dartmouth he was active as a College volunteer and served as class president from 1969 to 1973. After obtaining an M.B.A. at Harvard, Lou embarked on an amazingly successful career, beginning at McKinsey and Co., where he was made a partner in 1970 and a senior partner in 1973. He was then hired by American Express in 1978, becoming president in 1985 before moving in 1989 to RJR Nabisco as president after the furious bidding war memorialized in Barbarians at the Gate: The Fall of RJR Nabisco, which resulted in the company becoming private and owned by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts. That transaction was unsuccessful and, when Kohlberg Kravis exited, Lou was hired by IBM as president and CEO. IBM was under pressure at that time and Lou is widely credited with saving the company, raising its market value from $29 billion to $168 billion. After nine years, he retired to chair the Carlyle Group (2003-12). Lou was awarded many honors, including a Doctor of Humane Letters by Dartmouth. His philanthropic projects emphasized biomedical research, environment, education, and homelessness. He was predeceased by son Louis III; he is survived by wife Robin, one daughter, and four grandchildren, including Olivia ’27.
