Issue

May-June 2026

Lois Gadway Tow ’76 died January 25 of pancreatic cancer at her home in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Bruce ’74. In a recent Class Notes Lois detailed how she and Bruce met on her freshman trip with classmates Jamie Bergford, Jeff Kirchhoff, and Noel Kropf hiking in the Pemigewasset Wilderness and over Mount Carrigain. In an entry in the upcoming class 50th reunion book in June, she recounted: “We lived in married student housing (Sachem Village) for the remaining two years of my time at Dartmouth. We lived in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Indiana, and Arizona before settling in San Francisco for more than 30 years. I pursued a career in social services and healthcare administration. Later I did some substitute teaching when I was ready to slow down a little. In 2014, we moved to Boston, downsizing and moving near our daughter and her family.” Lois was part of Dartmouth’s first full coeducational class, receiving her A.B. in sociology and then earning a master’s in hospital administration from Arizona State University in 1982. She served as a Dartmouth alumna interviewer from 2005 to 2015. While at Dartmouth, she was in the Dartmouth Outing Club and involved in Women in Politics. In addition to her husband, Lois is survived by daughter Emily.
