Jonas A. Shulman ’57 , M.D., passed away at his home in Atlanta on January 6. At Dartmouth Jack was premed and played lacrosse and tennis. He earned his M.D. from the University of Maryland in 1960 and completed a residency there in 1961. He went on to the University of Washington in Seattle, where he completed a fellowship in infectious diseases in 1964 and a residency in internal medicine in 1967. Jack joined the faculty of Emory University in Atlanta for a long career practicing and training physicians in internal medicine and infectious diseases. He guided students and transformed curricula at Emory Medical School. He had deep curiosity, a love of clinical medicine, and compassion for patients. Renowned for his bedside manner, Jack built relationships with patients through his empathetic listening and comforting presence. He was a master diagnostician who combined astute observation of clinical and psychosocial clues with broad knowledge and possessed a remarkable ability to teach these skills to trainees, many of whom became lifelong friends. A special accomplishment was his involvement with Morehouse College in Atlanta in its development of a new medical school to train minority physicians. Jack was the author of the widely used Handbook for Differential Diagnosis of Infectious Diseases. He enjoyed classical guitar, played tennis, read widely, and every Sunday completed the New York Times crossword puzzle. Jack is survived by his wife, Pamela; sons Brett and Peter; and grandchildren.
