Issue

May-June 2026

Edward M. Jennings III ’57 passed away on January 18. Ted graduated from Noble and Greenough in Dedham, Massachusetts. He majored in English, was class president freshman year, and belonged to Delta Upsilon (president), the Undergraduate Council (judiciary committee), Green Key (treasurer), and Navy ROTC. Tall and naturally graceful, Ted rowed crew (lightweight and heavyweight). He served six years in the U.S. Navy and earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in English at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Ted began his teaching career as an assistant professor of English at Duke University. Except for a year working with the administration of Amherst College and three years as assistant to the president of State University of New York (SUNY) in Albany, his career was in the SUNY English department, where he did groundbreaking teaching and research. He was in the forefront of treating science fiction as a serious literary form. In 1984, decades before “online learning” was a term, Ted devised a paperless writing course that was conducted via the university’s mainframe computer. His soft-spoken civic leadership strengthened the arts, community services, and public land conservation in New York’s Upper Hudson Valley. Ted and his wife restored a classic (1910) colonial revival home overlooking the Hudson River. He served the College as class officer and club officer and through the Alumni Fund and Alumni Council. Ted is survived by Sally, his wife of 72 years; daughters Anne, Katie, and Penny; and grandchildren.
