Douglas C. Floren ’63 passed away on February 2. He was born in New York City to Swedish immigrants and attended Trinity School in Manhattan, where he was captain of the tennis team and played basketball and football. Doug majored in economics at Dartmouth and was rush chairman for Kappa Sigma and a member of Dragon and the prelaw group. Later he served on the class executive committee and reunion giving committee and as an Alumni Fund volunteer. After a stretch in the Marine Corps (lance corporal), Doug received an M.B.A. at New York University. He then began a career in asset management, spending 20 years at Smith Barney before starting his own hedge fund. He developed a specialty in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, identifying early trends in autoimmune disorders, cancer, sudden infant death syndrome, and other areas that often were transformative. These investment choices were successful enough to enable Doug and his wife of 58 years, Livvy, to make many charitable donations. At Dartmouth Doug was instrumental in bringing revered football coach Buddy Teevens ’79 back to Hanover and worked with him to build the Floren Varsity House. They also gave generously to several organizations in Greenwich, Connecticut, where they lived. Doug is survived by Livvy, whom he met in middle school; four children; and 12 grandchildren.
