David W. Cook ’57 passed away on September 25, 2025, in Elkins, New Hampshire. He came to Dartmouth from Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey. He majored in philosophy, was in Theta Delta Chi and Navy ROTC, served as football manager and on the Winter Carnival Council, competed on the swim team three years, played all four years with the well-traveled Indian Chiefs. After graduation he earned his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and served as an officer in the U.S. Navy. David’s business career was in investment counseling. He earned his chartered financial analyst, a certification for investment and financial professionals which is generally regarded as the “gold standard” in the investment management industry. He founded David W. Cook Inc. in 1969 and guided its successful growth over many years. Music was an important part of David’s life. He founded Reinterpretation Jazz Band for performances and recordings and said he subscribed to jazz composer Jelly Roll Morton’s sage dictum: “Always give ’em melody with plenty of rhythm.” Classmates will remember Dave playing his clarinet at Homecomings and five-year reunions. He contributed to Dartmouth as Alumni Fund volunteer, class officer (newsletter editor, president, gift planning chair), and alumni councilor (president). He is survived by his wife, Celeste; their five children; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
