January-February 2026
Conrad William Wesselhoeft ’55, M.D., a distinguished pediatric surgeon and member of the Providence, Rhode Island, medical community, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2025. Born in Amesbury, Massachusetts, on March 6, 1933, Bill came to Dartmouth from Amesbury High School. After graduating summa cum laude, he earned his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed residencies, including training in pediatric surgery at Children’s National Medical Center and thoracic surgery at George Washington, and served as a surgeon in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia. Upon returning to civilian life, Bill became one of the first two pediatric surgeons at Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence. He was also a faculty member of the surgery department at the Brown University Alpert Medical School. Known as a superb technical surgeon, an astute clinician, and an innovator, he was also a general pediatric surgeon: expert in cardiothoracic, urological, airway, and tracheal surgery in addition to traditional aspects of pediatric surgery. Outside the operating room, he was a devoted wine collector, enthusiastic tennis player, avid gardener, and member of the Flying Physicians Association, a nationwide community of physician-pilots who shared a passion for medicine and aviation. He is survived by a brother, four children, six grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter.
