Bevan M. French ’58 , Ph.D., died May 10, 2025, in Bethesda, Maryland. Bev grew up in Nutley, New Jersey, majored in geology, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He was active in the Geological Society, The Dartmouth, and Glee Club. He earned a master’s from Cal Tech in 1960 and a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins in 1964. Bev had a long career at NASA and lived in Maryland. A renowned geologist who traveled the world to do research on meteorite craters, he gave geology lessons to the astronauts going to the moon and examined the 843 pounds of rocks they brought back. He described his career as “exciting, unpredictable, often frustrating, and occasionally awe-inspiring. We collect tiny pieces of comets from the stratosphere, we bring back hundreds of meteorites from the Antarctic, and we use them to probe even deeper into the beginnings of the solar system and the universe. There is always something new to do, something wonderful to learn—there always will be.” Bev’s late wife, Mary-Hill, was a noted geologist. He is survived by two stepsons, one stepdaughter, and eight grandchildren.
