Russell “Rusty” Cheney ’03

Russell “Rusty” Cheney ’03 died in a plane crash into Loon Creek, within Idaho’s Frank Church Wilderness, on April 10, 2015. He was born to Lynn and Hugh Cheney on July 27, 1980. He graduated cum laude from the Salisbury School, sharing the headmaster medal for top scholar and earning the Founders Prize. He graduated from Dartmouth with a degree in engineering modified by studio art and was an active member of the Ledyard Canoe Club. After college Rusty worked one fire season on an engine crew in Hood River, Oregon, and four years with the U.S. Forest Service Idaho City Hotshots. In the fire off seasons Rusty worked at Shepp Ranch as a ranch hand and mule packer on hunting trips in Frank Church and Gospel Hump wilderness areas. Rusty worked many diverse jobs: as a horse wrangler and guide at the Linn Canyon Ranch, cabinetmaker for Steve Griffin Woodworking, project manager at Alta Enterprises and most recently with Creative Energies as a solar energy design engineer. He also chaired the Teton County Democratic Committee during the 2014 fall elections. He met Anna Trentadue in 2005 and they were married in 2008 at the Linn Canyon Ranch. His wife takes comfort in the fact that he passed without suffering, his ashes drifting into Loon Creek. Rusty is survived by Anna, their children Frank (2) and Jesse (2 months), his parents, sister Hope and brothers Ted and Tyler.
