John Schaeffer ’47, Th’48

John Schaeffer ’47, Th’48, died February 11 in Knoxville, Tennessee. He grew up in River Edge, New Jersey, and attended Hackensack High School. He was assigned to Dartmouth in the naval V-12 unit and went on to graduate from Thayer School in 1948. He attended Fuller Theological Seminary, graduating in 1952. He served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946 and then in the Naval Chaplain Corps from 1953 to 1971. As a chaplain, he served in the Far East, Italy and Philippines and on various ships. After retiring from the Navy, he served as pastor of several churches: in Reading, Pennsylvania, for eight years; in Belvidere, Tennessee for eight years; and in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, from which he retired in 1993 after six years there. In retirement his hobbies were photography, swimming, and gardening. He is survived by his wife and four children.
