David Kendall Sunderland ’52

David Kendall Sunderland ’52 passed away on December 17, 2023. David was born in Detroit on March 25, 1930, and spent his younger years in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Dartmouth with a degree in economics. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Dragon. He attended the University of Michigan Graduate School of Business and served as an officer in the Navy from 1952 to 1955. He then worked for General Motors, Raytheon Corp., Janss Corp., and finally at Gates Land Co. in Colorado Springs, Colorado. At Gates David developed Cheyenne Mountain Ranch, a 3,300-acre, mixed-use planned community that included homes, commercial and industrial space, the Country Club of Colorado, and Cheyenne Mountain Conference Resort. David served on the University of Colorado board of regents; as chairman of the board of the Greater Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce (which named him Business Citizen of the Year) and president of the Colorado Association of Home Builders (which named him Industry Man of the Year); and as cofounder of the Quality Economic Development Council and several other Colorado Springs organizations. He was named Colorado Springs Builder of the Year. David was predeceased by his wife, Brooke, in 2011. He is survived by children Mark, Cary, Matthew, and Tracy; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
