Andrew Planten Gaillard ’82

Andrew Planten Gaillard ’82 passed away on November 3, 2022, at his home in Wilton, Connecticut, surrounded by his immediate family. A passionate outdoorsman, athlete, and attorney, Andy is survived by wife Kendal Kerrigan Gaillard, children Lex (with wife Nora) and Gerrit, parents Bill and Kassie, and brothers Tom and Jeff. Andy graduated from Greenwich (Connecticut) High School, where he played varsity soccer. At Dartmouth he was a member of Phi Delta Alpha and joined crew his freshman year, becoming captain of the lightweight eight. Andy majored in history and then attended the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where he was managing editor of the law review. A devoted husband and father, Andy cherished time spent with family. He loved tennis, hiking, and backpacking and successfully summited Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and Mount Katahdin in Maine. Classmate Steve Lichtenauer remarked: “Andy was a cheerful, forward-looking friend to all—consistently ready for the next challenge or adventure, whether a backgammon rematch, a steep icy trail, a basement of revelers, or, more recently, a courtroom of judges.” Classmate John Froemming added: “Andy led a life of joy and gratitude. As a friend observed, he had a smile so big that it took over his face.” Andy demonstrated extraordinary courage in the months after he was diagnosed with inoperable stomach cancer. A few weeks before his death, he was able to witness via Zoom the christening of a four-person rowing shell named The Gaillard ’82. Andy called himself “the luckiest guy in the world.”
