Stephen W. Quickel ’58

Stephen W. Quickel ’58, longtime class secretary, died in Pennsylvania on December 7, 2022, of pneumonia and heart failure. Steve was born and raised in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, majored in English, and was a brother at Phi Delta Theta. In senior year he went to Tuck as part of the 3/2 business program. The weekend he received his M.B.A. at Tuck, Steve was commissioned as a Navy officer in a private ceremony in Hanover. Steve trained at a Navy supply school in Georgia and then, newly married, went to sea as supply officer of a radar picket destroyer in the Pacific Fleet. He would later describe this as a “defining experience.” After two years of Navy service, Steve worked at Mellon Bank for six months before deciding “I was bored and grabbed a chance opportunity” to become a journalist at Forbes magazine. Fifteen years and thousands of articles later, he left Forbes to start a stock market letter and then a hedge fund. His children have fond memories of canoeing with him in the Adirondacks and hiking in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains and on the Appalachian Trail. Steve was very active with the class, serving as secretary, newsletter editor, and alumni fund volunteer for many years. He will long be remembered for his superb writing, editing, and publishing of The Journey Continues, the 500-page companion to the class 50th reunion celebration. Steve is survived by his partner of many years, Mary Ann, son Steve ’82, a daughter, and four grandchildren.
