Joseph B. Blake ’58

Joseph B. Blake ’58 died in Denver on February 15. At Dartmouth Joe was a member of Kappa Sigma, Casque & Gauntlet, Undergraduate Council, Palaeopitus, and Green Key and was class president. He received the Barrett Cup at Commencement and then a law degree at the University of Colorado. Joe worked at the FBI and as a U.S. Senate aide before returning to Denver as a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development administrator. Later he was a real estate developer, CEO of the chamber of commerce, and chancellor of the state’s university system. He had leadership roles on many political issues, including public transit, education, housing, and air quality. He helped bring major league baseball to Colorado. A friend said Joe “was the hub around whom circles of people gathered—people of all ages and backgrounds, of wide-ranging views and interests.” As a teen Joe was an Eagle Scout, and later he was a lifetime trustee of the Denver Area Council of Boy Scouts of America. He leaves one daughter, one son, and four grandchildren.
