Robert D. Miller Jr. ’65

Robert D. Miller Jr. ’65, known to us fondly as “Jake,” passed away January 7 in Spokane, Washington, from complications of heart disease. He came to Dartmouth from Beloit, Wisconsin, and roomed for two years in Middle Mass as part of a triumvirate that included Gary Wilson ’65, also from Beloit, and Rick Mahoney ’65. Jake was an honors math major and treasurer of Gamma Delta Chi. Following Dartmouth he received an M.B.A. from Northwestern in 1970 and a law degree from Gonzaga in 1977. After dabbling in private practice in Spokane and finding it not to his liking, Jake joined the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Spokane, where he held a number of positions. He became acting U.S. trustee for Region 18 in 2008 and was appointed by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder as trustee in 2010 to oversee bankruptcy administration for five states in the Pacific Northwest. Jake was devoted to his bees and chickens, produced honey, grew fruit, built many things, and enjoyed using his backhoe. As he was at Dartmouth, Jake was popular among his many friends for his intelligence, quirky sense of humor, and quick wit. Animal House was his favorite movie and the Senator Blutarsky poster graced his home office. He is survived by his wife, Wendy, children, and granddaughter. His Dartmouth connections include daughter-in-law Heather Killebrew ’89 and brother Andrew ’72, Tu’73.
