Leo H. “Buddy” Bombard Jr. ’55

Leo H. “Buddy” Bombard Jr. ’55 passed away in late January in Palm Beach, Florida. Buddy came to Dartmouth from Roosevelt High School in Bronxville, New York. He majored in economics and was a member of Theta Delta Chi, Outing Club, Yacht Club, rifle team, diving team, and Air Force ROTC. Already an experienced ocean racer when he graduated, Buddy joined the Vim crew of Bus Mosbacher ’43 for the America Cup trials in 1958. He was also aboard Mosbacher’s Weatherly and Constellation, winners of the cup in 1962 and 1964. Buddy became manager of the Chalet Ski Club in New York and expanded the club’s mission from ski trips to adventure travel, including scuba diving, whitewater rafting, sky diving, and hiking. He then organized the Bombard Society to run hot-air balloon trips across the wine regions of France and Italy.
