Andrew Carson Harvard ’71

Andrew Carson Harvard ’71 died peacefully on January 16 surrounded by family and friends after courageously fighting a decade-long battle with younger-age-onset Alzheimer’s. Andy’s love of wilderness and the mountains started early in life when he became an Eagle Scout at age 14. While at Dartmouth he became deeply involved in the Outing Club and was elected president of the Mountaineering Club. Andy and his close friend, Todd Thompson ’70, were the first recipients of Dartmouth’s Ledyard Medal. After graduating Andy was involved in major Himalayan mountaineering expeditions in Nepal, India, and China, including three separate expeditions to Mount Everest, where he was part of the team that conquered the technically challenging east face. He attended Boston University Law School and was assistant attorney general for Washington State and senior attorney for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York during his legal career, among other positions. Andy was named an Explorer’s Club National Fellow and served on the board of the American Alpine Club. He returned to Dartmouth in 2004 and became the DOC’s director of outdoor programs. He was proud of the student-led construction of the Class of ’66 Lodge, formerly Harris Cabin. He is the inspiration behind The Final Climb, a documentary nearing completion about challenge, inspiration, and hope in ending Alzheimer’s. Andy leaves behind his loving wife and caregiver, Kathy; sons Graham, James, and Nicholas; daughter Allegra; and nieces Shelagh and Kate.
