Malcolm B. Smith ’44

Malcolm Smith ’44 died August 16, 2022, in Tarrytown, New York. Malcolm was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, and attended Boston Latin School. He graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, played football, and was a handball champion, president of Pi Lambda Phi, and worked as the head waiter for the Hanover Inn. From 1943 to 1946 he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps., then went on to earn an M.A. in economics from Harvard. In 1948 he joined the staff of General American Investors Co., where he spent his entire business career, becoming president in 1959 and retiring in 1988. He served on many charitable boards, including Human Rights Watch, John Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, and New York Foundation. He was a trustee of the New School board for 40 years and served as chair for 10. International travel with an art history focus was a major interest for Malcolm and his wife of 74 years, Betty, along with symphonic and chamber music. (They subscribed to the New York Philharmonic for more than 50 years.) Malcolm was an avid tennis player into his mid-80s and also enjoyed skiing, often with his two sons. He is survived by Betty, son Eric and wife Mary, son Dan ’78 and wife Flor, and grandchildren Matt, David, Sijo, Mia, and Lincoln. Brother Marshall ’52 died earlier in 2022.
