Loye W. Miller Jr. ’51

Loye W. Miller Jr. ’51 died in Seaford, Delaware, on February 17. A career journalist, he served the College and his class in many leadership roles as an alumnus. Loye was newsletter editor for the class immediately upon graduation and went on to become class secretary, mini-reunion chair, and class agent. He was a Dartmouth club president, Alumni Council representative, and served on the editorial board of Dartmouth Alumni Magazine. He was honored by his class with the Spirit of ’51 Award. Following graduation Loye earned a master’s in journalism from Columbia University and spent three years in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant, j.g. His first newspaper job was at the Charlotte (North Carolina) Observer. He later worked for Time magazine as White House correspondent and political writer, covering many of the presidential events and campaigns of the 1960s. He became chief of the Midwest news bureau of Time-Life magazines in Chicago. Subsequent positions included senior reporter for Knight-Ridder Newspapers; Chicago Sun-Times Washington, D.C., bureau chief; and senior posts at Gannett Newspapers and Newhouse Newspapers. He had a successful second career in public affairs and corporate communications in the U.S. Department of Education, U.S. Department of Justice, and Northrop-Grumman Corp. In retirement Loye moved to West Lebanon, New Hampshire, where he enjoyed tennis, skiing, hiking, and especially fly fishing, a hobby that took him to Alaska, Labrador, and northern Russia. Survivors include daughter Lissa ’79.
