Joseph Langdon Holmes ’73

Joseph Langdon Holmes ’73 died on May 26 at the Maplewood Nursing Home in Westmoreland, New Hampshire, after a yearlong battle with brain cancer. A native of Langdon, New Hampshire, Joe came to Dartmouth from Fall Mountain Regional High School. At the College he majored in biology and played intramural soccer and hockey. After Dartmouth Joe lived an eclectic life, working in farming, insurance, and software technology before becoming a registered nurse in 2009 after attending River Valley Community College. He then worked at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in White River Junction, Vermont, and more recently at Maplewood Nursing Home until his final illness. For nearly 50 years Joe also served as a volunteer firefighter and an emergency medical technician. He had a great sense of humor and was intellectually curious, enjoying the poetry of Robert Frost, music, singing, handicrafts, cooking, farming, reading, storytelling, and the antics of his rescue dog Zoe. Joe is survived by his wife, Eileen, daughter Chloe ’01, and son Jason. He was predeceased by his parents, Christine and Clifford Holmes ’40, and his brother, Edward ’65, Tu’74. Memorial contributions may be made to the Third Congregational Church Guild, in care of Joanne Stevens, P.O. Box 164, Alstead, NH 03602, or to the Maplewood Nursing Home Auxiliary Association, 201 River Road, Westmoreland, NH 03467.
