John H. Hicks ’63

John H. Hicks ’63 died unexpectedly on June 22 from previously undiagnosed pancreatic cancer. John was born in Evanston, Illinois, and attended Palatine Township High School, where he was active in baseball, cross country, golf, and basketball. His father was an amateur golf champion and John followed in his father’s footsteps, an activity that took him around the world, ending in retirement in Hilton Head, South Carolina. At Dartmouth John graduated in English, was a brother of Psi Upsilon, and active in golf, skiing, and swimming. He was suspended from Dartmouth for two years, which he spent in the U.S. Navy in Norfolk, Virginia, working in intelligence for the U.S. Navy Fleet Forces Command and playing on the Navy golf team. His good Navy service helped him return to Dartmouth and graduate in 1965. After Dartmouth John worked as a registered representative for three New York Stock Exchange firms and became a member of the Chicago Board Options Exchange in 1976 through 2000, acting as a market maker. In 1976 John joined William Blair & Co. in Chicago, focusing on institutional sales and trading for large mutual funds and pension funds. He retired in 2000 as a general partner and moved to Hilton Head. John is survived by his wife, Althea; his first wife, Wendy; three children; and three grandchildren.
