Joel M. Jutkowitz ’63
Joel M. Jutkowitz ’63, Ph.D., died on July 28, 2024, at Weill Cornell Hospital in New York City. At Dartmouth Joel majored in international relations and was managing editor of The Dartmouth as well as a crew member and manager. He was an alumni interviewer for many years. Joel received an M.A. in political science at Yale in 1965 and a Ph.D. in political science at New York University in 1976. Near the end of his time at Yale, his senior fellow mentor at Dartmouth, Professor Silvert, recruited Joel to conduct research in Chile and Venezuela. While in Chile, Joel met his future wife, Betty; they returned to the United States in 1967, and Joel taught political science at San Diego State University. They returned to Chile for another study in 1970, when the left-leaning Salvador Allende government was elected. That government was overthrown in a brutal coup in 1973, which upended Joel and Betty’s lives. Joel had a postdoctoral fellowship from the Tufts Fletcher School of Law and was a professor at the Latin American School of Political Science followed by work as a research specialist for the United Nations in Chile. In 1974 Joel moved back to the States to run the Institute for the Study of Human Issues in Philadelphia. In 1987 he became a senior associate for Development Associates, a consultancy contractor to USAID, moving to a similar job for Management Systems International in 2004. He is survived by Betty, three children, four grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
