Issue

July-August 2023

Jack Heidbrink ’65 of Burlington, Massachusetts, died on February 17. He came to Dartmouth from New Trier High School in Wilmette, Illinois. At Dartmouth he was vice president of Beta Theta Pi and played football and ran track. Following Dartmouth he received an M.A. from the University of Wisconsin. Jack’s career was spent as a history teacher at Lexington (Massachusetts) High School, where he taught for 35 years. He also coached football and served as a supervising teacher who mentored future educators through Tufts and Harvard. Jack had a deep faith and was an active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Through the years he served in multiple roles, including senior warden, property chairperson, Sunday school teacher, vestry, lay reader, chalicer, and search committee participant. In 2014 Jack was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, which slowly took away his memory. His family, friends, and all the people around him supported him throughout this phase, making it the best possible experience for all. He will be remembered as a man of wisdom who was thoughtful, kind, and generous, and, most importantly, he will be remembered for his love and devotion to family. Jack’s generosity continues, as he chose to participate in an Alzheimer’s research study with an organ donation to the Boston University Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) Center. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sue, daughters Kristine and Kimberly, and five grandchildren.
