Edward L. Spetnagel III ’57

Edward L. Spetnagel III ’57 passed away on October 26, 2023. Ted attended Edgemont (Scarsdale, New York) schools then Choate School. He was a history major and a member of Alpha Delta Phi, the Dartmouth Outing Club, and the cross-country team. Ted joined the rugby club his junior year and in his senior year the team went undefeated in six games, allowing opponents to score an amazing total of only three points and earning a trip to compete in Bermuda. After graduation he served in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey. He was a successful businessman in sales and sales management for Continental Can Co., where he worked for close to 20 years while living in the Midwest. He embarked on a second career as a personal investor and financial advisor. Seeking a sunnier climate near the ocean, he moved to Ponte Vedra, Florida. Ted was friendly and fun loving. He was a great host who organized parties around the Kentucky Derby, the Indianapolis 500, golf tournaments, and his hometown Cincinnati Bengals and Jacksonville Jaguars. He was a top-notch piano player. Ted directed his philanthropy efforts in Florida toward Pine Castle (an organization that empowers adults with disabilities to learn, work, and connect) and Habitat for Humanity. He followed Dartmouth sports teams and was an Alumni Fund volunteer. He conducted admission interviews for many years in Ohio and Florida. Ted is survived by sons Steven, David, and Thomas and several grandchildren.
