Dean C. Allard Jr. ’55

Dean C. Allard Jr. ’55 died on September 27, 2018, in Falls Church, Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Connie, sons Scott and Hunt, daughter Elizabeth, and five grandchildren. A native of Kansas City, Missouri, Dean came to Dartmouth from Pembroke Country Day School. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta and the Psychology Club. The combination of Navy ROTC training and a major in history led Dean to a successful career as a naval historian. He was transferred after a year at sea to the Navy’s historical office in Washington, D.C. After completing his service obligation, Dean continued to work for the Navy as a civilian, and became director of naval history. He was responsible for the Navy’s historical and museum activities, including the Navy Department Library and the USS Constitution in Boston Harbor. Dean earned an M.A. from Georgetown University in 1959 and a Ph.D. from George Washington University in 1965. He also taught at George Washington as an adjunct professor. Among his alumni activities, Dean served as an alumni admissions interviewer and career network volunteer.
