Class Note 1938

Issue

Mar - Apr 2017

In September 1934: The action begins with a week of orientation starting on the 15th, when the dorms are opened. The class total is variously reported at 705, 707 and 708, with the last being correct. Admissions reported the historic marvel to the dean of freshmen. He rocketed the news to the dean of the College and together they requested an audience with President Hopkins.

Standing rigidly in the presidential office, Dean Neidlinger stated, “There are 708 men in the freshman class and that makes it the biggest in College history.” Rising and seeming to address the whole world, President Hopkins declared, “That is amazing! The class of 1938 is absolutely amazing!” and, thus, the amazing class of 1938 was born.

Today’s students would think the College officials of 1934 were hysterical when they put together ’38’s freshman rules: Freshman hat worn at all times outdoors, no crossing of the Green; only Nugget side-seats available to freshmen; must attend all rallies; stand and cheer almost constantly at football games.

In December 1934: Astonishing headline in The D: Dr. Wolfe [Dr. Walter Beran Wolfe ’21], Well-known Psychologist, believes Dartmouth Should Turn Coed for Own Good.”

In June 1938: As Hanover’s population doubles for a day, 505 ’38s smash clay pipes on the stump of the Old Pine and receive their degrees

Just a very few tidbits from 77-78 years ago. I can only envision those times and, after meeting the “amazing class,” can only say: “It was an amazing time.”

All the best in 2017—wah hoo wah!
