Class Note 1938

Issue

Sept - Oct 2010

“During my high school years the big event of each fall was a weekend trip to Boston for the Harvard-Dartmouth game and reunion of my father’s classmates and an overnight at the Parker House, including their rolls and codfish cakes for breakfast. Much cheering or commiserating after the football game and memories of the old days in Hanover in the Harvard Stadium. September 1934 was to be my first of five years of personal encounter with the view from the Hanover Inn of the Green, Baker, the white classrooms, the Commons, swarming freshmen with their beanies—all so symbolic of the College. The first week of College is probably most memorable as well as frightening, especially such things as who is to be my roommate, how difficult shall be my classes, how threatening shall be my professors, how will we do with the rope tug of war with the sophomores and the Commons food. I found that the more extracurricular activities one engaged in, the more and different friends I would meet, activities such as sports, the German Club, theater, fraternity, interfaith organization, etc.” I received a wonderful letter from Dr. Philip Thompson, who brought such memories as above and a few more. Per his suggestion, I am asking our ’38ers: What has Dartmouth and the class of 1938 meant in your life? How much do you owe to Dartmouth and your classmates? I will continue his letter in the next column. Hope to hear from you, and to Dr. Thompson, a great big wah-hoo-wah from me.

News of the passing of Dick “Whitey” Farrington was received from his daughter Lynn. Dick is not only reliving his Dartmouth days with deceased classmates, but is with his dear wife, Betty Rose, and Molly, his cocker spaniel/companion whom he shared with Lynn. Deepest sympathy to Lynn and her husband, Neil, on his passing.
