Class Note 1971
Issue
September-October 2026
Class Note 1971. Sunday, June 14, dawned beautifully in Hanover. Some drove in from an hour away and by about 7:30 a.m. nearly 100 plus significant others had assembled at Rollins Chapel. Then came the call to march, and proudly we created the walk we might have made in 2021 but for Covid. We walked onto the Green in a spirit of thanksgiving and exhilaration—we had finally made it! President Beilock spoke beautifully and the graduation speaker Rachel Dratch ’88 humored and challenged graduates and alumni. Then it was off to luncheons, tours, and, luckily, freeing one classmate who had gone to his wine cellar that morning only to have the lock fall off behind him. Trapped for a few minutes, he was lucky his wait in the cooler was not long and he emerged to continue the celebrations. Dinner at the Hanover Inn was much more subdued.
On Monday classmates played golf at Montcalm, followed by a terrific dinner at Rockefeller Center, where nearly all attendees were present and joyfully telling old and new stories. Beilock came by to receive two checks from Jim Rager and Peter Pratt in support of our class charities.
On Tuesday Beilock gave a college update in the Hop. About athletics, she firmly stated, “We want to win!” After lunch we gathered in Rollins to read the names of the 155 classmates who have passed before us. Dave Edson served as officiant, Dan Clouse read a reflection, and Mac Barrett,Jerry O’Brien, and I (AliceReno Malone)read the names as faces and stories passed before our eyes and minds. The still North remembers them, the hill winds know their names, and the granite of New Hampshire keeps the record of their fame.
Wednesday was filled with tours, another speech from the president, and much more camaraderie at lunch and dinner. New class officers were elected, and we thanked Jim Rager and his crew for their great work during the last five years and welcomed Ted Eismeier as our new president. Then we stayed up late into the night, as we were down the road on Thursday morning.
I could not end this without praising Willis Newton and his committee of Jim Fitzpatrick, SteveandNancy Hoverman,Jack Burnett, David Edson, Kathy Rines, Jeffrey McElnea, David Brooks, and others mentioned above for planning and executing a magnificent reunion. “What time next year?” some were heard to say!
We have received notice of the passing of Robert Henry Lavenda on July 23, 2025, and Dirck Keyser Iacobelli on June 11.
