Class Note 1962
Issue
September-October 2026
Class Note 1962. Classmates responded to the question: Which professor most influenced you as an undergrad? (My thanks to all contributors.)
Rick Meyers writes: “Patrick Scott-Craig in religion and philosophy was a lifesaver my freshman year, helping me through a serious personal crisis involving antisemitism and opening my mind in new and exciting ways. Fred Bethold was right behind. I am involved as a past president of the American Society for Overseas Research in cultural heritage projects in the Middle East supported by our U.S. Department of State. I retired in 2015 but stayed involved with scholarship in my area. My memoir, An Accidental Archaeologist, appeared in 2023. I’m playing golf and singing also. My wife, Carol, and I both enjoy good health.” Alan Rapoport writes: “My freshman advisor, who stuck with me for four years, was Dr. John Copenhaver. He was a wonderful man and helped me a lot, and I ended up majoring in zoology and he was often one of my professors.”
Jim Sammarco writes: “Professor Wolfenden for inorganic chemistry; quiet demeanor, subtle humor, and ability to listen. He was clever and nonjudgmental.” Jay Parsons writes: “Dr. Robert Huke of the geography department undoubtedly had the greatest influence on me as an undergraduate as well as through the early years of my adult life and career.” (For a fascinating account of Jay’s adventures in Southeast Asia and further studies after Dartmouth, see the next issue of the class newsletter.)
Mike Rouzee writes: “I took every course that J.C. Adams taught. His observations about Russia, Germany, and the Balkans still echo every day. Professor Russell gave me a C- in Spanish provided I take no more Spanish classes. I still have a fairly good vocabulary (lived in Peru when I was 6).”
Peter Norstrand writes: “Professor Starzinger’s course on constitutional law was a major factor in my decision to attend law school.” (Due to space limitations, the remainder of Peter’s thought-provoking comment will follow next time.)
I regret to inform you of the deaths of Joel C. Monell, Ph.D., of Beverly, Massachusetts, on April 5; Russell “Russ” W. Hardy Jr., M.D., of Shaker Heights, Ohio, on May 1.
