Class Note 2014

Issue

July-August 2026

Class Note 2014. Happy summer, ’14s! For many of you this part of the year may bring back fond memories of time spent outdoors at Dartmouth. On the other hand, I recently heard a college-bound senior concerned that Dartmouth might be too outdoorsy! This took me a bit by surprise—I wouldn’t consider myself or even many of my close friends as exceedingly outdoorsy. The closest I ever came to a tent during my four years at Dartmouth was a pink one shaped like a princess castle bought on a whim from CVS. (Talia Weiss and I assembled it in Baker hallway and distributed free King Arthur pastries during finals—a good use of our remaining dining money.)
But one can’t deny that sometimes Dartmouth does feel like a great big summer camp, and maybe that granite of New Hampshire does instill something a little outdoorsy in all of us. I always did love afternoons spent canoeing on the river, and since moving to England I’ve discovered wild swimming and gained a bit of a taste for countryside stomping (assuming there’s a pub at the end of the journey). Well, at any rate, I hope to hear about your summer adventures—whether outdoors or not—as well as your classmate get-togethers, newfound hobbies, life updates, etc. Share your news at dartmouth2014classnotes@gmail.com or the email below! Now on to the updates.
Troup Wood is living in Los Angeles, where he has written and released a couple of movies. He and his wife also welcomed a baby in mid-April!
In case anyone is traveling to London this summer and hoping to spend an evening at the theatre, take note: William Kamkwamba’s autobiographical book The Boy Who Harnessed theWind has been adapted into a musical by the Royal Shakespeare Company. After debuting in Stratford-upon-Avon earlier this year, the performance has moved into London’s West End and runs at Soho Place through July 18. The story follows William’s efforts to save his Malawian village from famine by building a wind turbine using only library books and the scrap materials at hand. Since graduation William has split his time between America and Malawi, working with the Moving Windmills Project for ethical development in Malawi and the University of North Carolina’s WiderNet Project for advancing digital information and technology curriculums in developing nations around the world.
As senior director of marketing, communications, e-commerce, and brand strategy for Tory Burch, Gabrielle Chen spoke to students interested in careers in the fashion industry during a Dartmouth Center for Career Design event taking place during New York Fashion Week this past February. Gabrielle reflected on her switch from finance to fashion, her 2018 relocation to Tokyo, and the role Dartmouth’s liberal arts education has played in her career, advising students to give themselves the courage to explore: “The career you ultimately build may look very different from what you first imagined. In my experience, that is rarely a problem. It is usually the point.”
