Class Note 1983
Issue
July-August 2026
Class Note 1983. Taking a break from surfing and vibing big time on a spring Tortola excursion, Kevin Connolly writes: “I’ve been busy getting my latest album, No Where, out there; it’s focused on themes of longing and doubt. My recent gigs have included performances in N.Y.C. at the Irish Arts Center and in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at Club Passim, attended by a whole block of ’83s, including Dave Persampieri, Shelley Drake Hawks, Kathy Provost, Jenny Cheshire Hussin, and Walter Foster, which was cool. I’m doing film and TV auditions; brought all my audition equipment. Oh, and there’s an Italian tour this summer!”
Reality check: Many of us will be turning 65 this or next year, if we haven’t already. Big round of applause, “raise the roof” didn’t seem appropriate for Kimball Halsey, who led a virtual “D ’83 Discussion: Understanding Medicare” in March. Don’t fret if you missed this timely discussion; MarenChristensen and James McKim have posted the event video on our class website.
On a more lyrical note, Kirk Glaser’s recent poetry collection, The House That Fire Built, is now available at major and independent booksellers. He describes his poems as “California gothic (with a twist of the dharma). It covers a significant bit of my life when we had a (haunted) house burn down in the Santa Cruz Mountains.” Video from one of his readings, along with images of the fire, can be viewed on the Disquieting Muses Quarterly “Salon” website (September 2025). Through the years his work has twice been nominated for the Pushcart Prize, he won the University of California Poet Laureate Award, and his work has appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle and many other publications. Kirk is also a teaching professor at Santa Clara University, where he serves as director of the creative writing program.
During our annual class of ’83 meeting on April 28 we were joined by LizCahill Lempres: board of trustees chair, and current members of the Alumni Council, including Bruce Danzinger, president; Joe Dempsey, Class Officers Association representative and a nominating committee member; Laura Stein, at-large representative; Mike Hjerpe, class of ’83 representative, new alumni engagement committee chair, and an alumni liaison committee member; and Bruce Redman, class of ’83 representative-elect. The topics of discussion included the College’s relationship and interaction with the federal government, frequency and transparency of college communications with alumni, policy of “institutional restraint,” the Dartmouth Center for Career Design, and new dorms opening this fall and the nearly completed renovation of the Fayerweathers.
We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of John Weiss.
