July-August 2026

Class Note 1966. A Dartmouth liberal arts education prepares students to think creatively, be open to new career paths, and give back to society—throughout their lives. Here are just a few current examples from our class.
Steve Smith retired in 1996 after 30 years in manufacturing and marketing positions with firms including GE and AT&T. He and Jean settled in Lakeside, Michigan, and founded the nonprofit Chikaming Open Lands land trust in 1999 to protect five acres. Today the trust protects more than 2,200 acres (about 4 square miles) in southwest Michigan.
After Dartmouth David Stedman was an award-winning, inner-city elementary teacher in Camden, New Jersey, retiring at 55. He then was a Philadelphia tour guide, Christian art and history trip leader to Europe, a wine advisor, and president of the Clan Campbell Society. He currently serves as secretary of the Camden Home for Children and president of the Walt Whitman Association. Along the way David and Peggy raised three successful children and have nine grandkids, ages 8 months to 21 years.
Class head agent Bob Spence, who was an international commercial banker for 30 years, spent his spring as an AARP tax volunteer in Medford, Oregon, helping hundreds of low-income and elderly residents. Bob and Linda are active fundraisers—he for Dartmouth, she for scholarships for women. They also stay busy visiting their three sons and four grown grandchildren and friends back East.
Brad Stein taught high school in Washington, D.C., for 14 years, then switched careers to become a New York-based corporate defense attorney. Now, when not touring as class travel chair, Brad and Mary campaign for local candidates in Columbia County, New York.
Bill Sprole was in the U.S. Air Force for 26 years. Then he worked in airline flight control and in government civilian service with the U-2 program. Bill and Sue are now in Denver, near both children and a grandson, still hiking, skiing, and taking up pickleball. “Not bad for two geezers,” Bill writes, “coming up on a 60th wedding anniversary!”
We note with regret the recent passing of building contractor Charles Greenberg and grain merchant Ron Tracey. More on each at dartmouth.66.org and the online Dartmouth Alumni Magazine.
