Class Note 1982

Issue

March - April 2026

Class Note 1982. By the time you read this column, ’82s will be waxing their skis (or snowboards) and packing their helmets, goggles, and ski boots and heading to Park City, Utah, for the third annual ski mini-reunion taking place March 6-8. Non-skiers are also welcome! A report and photos to follow in an upcoming Class Notes column or class newsletter.
Please put March 23 in your calendar since that is the 82nd day of the year. Take a selfie and post it in the class Facebook group and let us know where you are and what you are doing. Bonus points if you can include another classmate in the photo!
Kudos to Cheryl Bascomb, who retired at the end of December as Dartmouth vice president of alumni relations. She did us proud for seven years, keeping us together through a pandemic, nationwide campus protests, and unprecedented attacks on academic freedom and diversity programs. Cheryl is a Gemini, so I know there will be an Act III (and perhaps even IV) ….
Congratulations to Cindy Willett Sherwood on her appointment to the City of Williamsburg (Virginia) Electoral Board. Cindy writes: “I can’t think of many things more important right now than ensuring fair elections at every level of our democracy.”
Jeff Newman was recently featured in the Concord (New Hampshire) Monitor artist spotlight column. He states: “I am primarily a surrealist. I work in a variety of mediums, including painting, collage, mixed media, and assemblage.” Jeff adds: “I have drawn for most of my life. During college I was instructed by several amazing artists.”
Robin Riley Ahrens is now serving as a docent at the Hood Museum in Hanover. Robin shares: “Being a docent at the Hood is such a privilege. The museum plays a special role on the Dartmouth campus and is a resource for the Upper Valley community, which is what we serve.” Robin trained intensively for four months and continues to train once a week throughout the academic year.
Kate Pesek Roski and her husband, Dudley, spent Thanksgiving with his family in Indianapolis, Indiana. Kate and Philippa Guthrie got together for brunch at Shapiro’s Delicatessen, the oldest family-owned deli still in operation in the United States.
Melissa Cook spent her December birthday in Hanover—first visiting her mother and then taking “a vigorous walk in the Storrs Pond area in the snow.” She sent a lovely photo of the trees, which, unfortunately, cannot be reproduced here.
I am sorry to close this column with the sad news of the deaths of three classmates: Michael GerryMoran, Lloyd Nelson Martin, and Gerard A. Hekker Jr. May their memories be a blessing and the hill winds remember their names! Happy spring!
