Class Note 1958
Issue
March - April 2026
Class Note 1958. With a two-month lead time for these columns, this one was written midway in Hanukkah and just before Christmas. With the light cast by both, a new year beckons with its annual brilliance illuminating the hopes of a nation and world recognizing all peoples are created equal.
In our little microcosm, the 289 of us who survive have or are about to become nonagenarians, some with bigger splashes than others. There are laggards such as Tryg Myhren, Don Whitham, andme (John Trimble), who remain the babies of the class, but leading the way are guys such as Bob Abbott, John Otis, and Bob Downey, who celebrated his 90th just before his Christmas Eve date with a special bash in New York City thrown by his imaginative children.
I’m told that Nancy made her presence known looking down from above to make sure Bob acted his age. Of course, who really knows how a 90-year-old should act. Mary and Hal Bernsen, Mike Growney, and Sam Silverstein helped the celebration. Some of us may eventually celebrate by sucking bourbon from a baby bottle! You can tell from the foregoing that real news was scarce this time around.
Larry Hampton continues to show his chops by traveling around Europe and writing about these excursions in The Resident, the largest English-language magazine in Portugal.
From the other end of the world, Mel Croner pops up on Facebook from the West Coast from time to time and always seems to be on the move. Back on the East Coast, Larry Weltin chortles about newfound mobility in a V12 mobility scooter that has made him more of a hazard than ever! Vroom!
Since our last column we’ve learned of the following classmates who have died: Richard Lenio, Raymond Robbins, Herb Swarzman, and Ned Stedhem. In addition, we lost another member of the family when Ann Bradley died barely two weeks after spending the evening of our October class dinner with us. Sadly, we also learned that Jim Fannin’s son has died.
