Class Note 1950
Issue
January-February 2026
Class Note 1950. It was all we expected and more. The 75th reunion is history. First off, let me list the players: Bill Carpenter (and Bill Carpenter ’74), Joel Leavitt (and Veda DeCof), Dotty McCulloch (and Stacey McCulloch), Kent and Susan Mitchell, Joan McIlwain (and Robert McIlwain ’81), Tom Ruggles (and Rebecca Ruggles-Radcliffe ’74), Doug and Meredith Smith, Barbara Veghte Fowler (and Elizabeth Veghte ’92), and Bob Wilkinson (and Amy Wilkinson ’78 and Monty Wilkinson ’83). It all started on a sunny Sunday, September 28, with a delightful catered bus ride of the entire campus (some of which I didn’t know existed). That evening was a shared banquet at the Hanover Inn (with other reuning classes) and a fabulous concert by what I remember as the Injunaires, which brought back memories of its founding with my roommate and lifelong friend, Ort Hicks ’49. (All the reuners were housed on the fourth floor of the inn.) Three days followed with interesting meetings and intimate sessions and time for strolling our wonderful campus, alive with students. The class of ’50 had a brief meeting at reunion’s end and a decision was made that we would attempt to have a mini meeting come the fall as we have had in the past. Having received no news from my classmates other than those listed above, I close with news of my own. I am eager to get mail and news from any and all at my new address: Timothy Wheeler House, 110 Walden St., Concord, MA 01742. My phone remains (978) 369-5879.

52 Welcome to 2026! We hope the holiday season was a happy and healthy one for you and your family as we enter the second quarter of the 21st century. In recent years, I have received a few life summaries from classmates and found them very interesting, informative, and often heartwarming. It isn’t really appropriate to call them biographies, but they all have some biographical content. Some focus thoughts on family, some on career, some on society, and some are just philosophical. The most recent offering comes from Ken Roman and, not surprisingly, it is all of the above and is titled “Big Ideas.” It’s not too long, a little over 100 pages, but it is packed with worthwhile reading on a variety of topics including, of course, Dartmouth. I spoke with Ken, thanked him, and asked about availability. He said he had about 20 copies and he would be happy to share them with classmates on a first-come, first-serve basis, no charge. If you have a contact for Ken, please get in touch directly. If not, use my contact below and I’ll pass it on. Moving on, it seems as though everyone has a good Rosenwald story, Ken has several, and we’re very pleased to add yet another. This past year the College announced a new major undergraduate scholarship named in honor of John Rosenwald. The Trailblazer Scholarship program was created in 2022 by an anonymous donor and is one of the largest commitments to financial aid at the College. So far, John is one of eight recipients so honored. There will be a total of 10 honorees and, when fully funded, the program is designed to support 10 undergraduates each year. As we all know, John is a masterful fundraiser, and as one Dartmouth officer said, “John has an extraordinary gift for listening—really listening—to what people care about, what gives them pause, and what inspires them.” Well spoken. We’re always looking for news from our classmates and family. Please get in touch. Only about 20 months until our 75th, and final, reunion. Stay well.
