Class Note 2012. Hi, ’12s! If you’re reading this in the Northern Hemisphere, I hope the weather outside isn’t too frightful and that the fire’s so delightful. And to our friends below the equator, try not to taunt us too much with your sun and fun. Winter term was admittedly one of my favorite quarters at Dartmouth. But in this age of never-ending responsibility, this time of year usually prompts dreams of sitting beachside, watching foamy waves crash onto the white, sandy shores. I’m not much of a swimmer these days, but I’ll wade in the water until buoyant forces launch me into the air, causing me to stumble forward back onto shore. One of our classmates, however, has essentially been living in the water these past few months.
Dartmouth swimming alum Chris Calby reports that he completed 20 Bridges Swim this past July in Manhattan. The swim around the urban isle took him nine hours and 27 minutes to finish! He was joined by fellow swimming alum Bethamy Aranow ’87. He recalled, “After setting off at 2:24 p.m., we made it through the East River and into the Harlem River and then all the way up past Columbia and into the Hudson.” Chris’s stroke rate started to fall five hours into the challenge, and by the sixth hour, he admits, “I started questioning my sanity and was unsure of whether I could actually complete the swim.” By nightfall, new challenges emerged. After managing to dodge some barges and party boats whizzing across the Hudson, the waters grew choppier, and he became very seasick. And then a voice cried out from the…kayak, and with the encouragement of his crew, our amphibious son of Dartmouth pushed through and finished the challenge just before midnight. In August, Chris crushed the Swim Across the Sound, which took him from Port Jefferson, New York, to Bridgeport, Connecticut. And in September, he made his way to the West Coast for a marathon swim across the Catalina Channel, just southwest of Los Angeles. Give a rouse (and toss in a few more) for Chris!
While we’re in a celebratory mood, let’s also give a rouse for our favorite former cheerleader, Cassie Jackson! She writes that she and her husband, Daniel, welcomed a baby boy, Apollo Zori, to their family in July. She also offered that, “He’s going to look great in Dartmouth green!” Cassie, we’re inclined to A-G-R-E-E!
Do the titles “captain,” “principal,” or “boss” appeal to you? Ever raved to someone about your knack for logistics and event planning? Is your financial recordkeeping the envy of all your friends? If you answered “Yes!” to any of the above, you should consider volunteering as our class president, vice president, or treasurer. If interested, please reach out to Tim Koeth at tkoeth@gmail.com. Our 15-year reunion is turning the corner at breakneck speed, and we’d love to have you on board to help make it the best reunion yet!
