Class Note 1958

Class Note 1958. The class held its fall mini-reunion during Homecoming Weekend. We are a predictable group, limited mostly by the three “Ms”: mobility, memory, and mortality! We acted our ages, which translates into being curmudgeons about college and national things, echoing the lyrics from “Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better.” It’s still great fun, but we do go to bed early! Pete Tower wrote that hecould not attend, citing one of the three reasons above. He gets his Dartmouth jollies by watching football on ESPN+. He wanted to be reminded how many of us remain out of the class that matriculated. As of Labor Day, there were 338 classmates alive out of the 757 who started. I also heard from Carol Knapp. She and Harold Knapp continue to live in Glen Rock, New Jersey, but have been slowed by two of the three limitations above. Their lives are supported by part-time caregivers. Hoyt Goodrich sent a story about an affliction many of us share but which is not as limiting as my three M’s. But it can be just as embarrassing since it involves hearing and grand malaprops. One of the most prevalent accoutrements spied within our class are hearing aids. It makes me wonder just how many of the 338 sport one, and by extension, how many have new hips, knees, shoulders, pacemakers, stents, and defibrillators! Tryg Myhren and I have talked about arteries and veins, bypasses and stents, stenosis and sepsis, and other stuff that our bodies put us through. If you’d told an actuary in 1958 that there would be 45 percent of us remaining 63 years in the future, he’d have laughed himself into becoming a statistic! Like clockwork, within hours of the publication of The Sound and Fury, I hear from Jake Jacobus lamenting the loss of the Hanover Country Club. In the latest he also celebrated his son, Randy ’87, on winning the Arizona Mid-Amateur Championship. Lastly, Gersh Abraham has discovered a new talent as watercolorist. Rest in peace, Nancy Downey,David K. Foster, and Dave T. Parsons. Send me other news!
