Class Note 1938

Issue

Sept - Oct 2012

Hi, Al. Yes, I was referring to you! Opened the mail and there was a note from Al Wolff. It reminded me of our mini-reunions and I felt like Al was sitting right next to me with Ash Lans, Richard, Peggy and Goldye—and, as always, we were laughing and reliving good times, remembering old friends and pontificating about the future. And here we are!

Al relived an event participated in by the class of ’38, but I can’t believe it, as it doesn’t sound like the gentlemen I know. I hope it brings at least a smile and, perhaps, roaring laughter—it brought a tear for me! “Remember the tug of war our freshmen year where we out-pulled and out-cheered the class of ’37. There was a large outcry after our victory to storm the Nugget. Many of us did and were met by the management with tear gas. There were a lot of sore-eyed ’38ers as a result! We lost that battle” You may have lost that battle, but let us not forget you won the war. I love hearing about my gentlemen of ’38—I can hear Richard laughing at the hijinks! I’m sending you a hug, Al. Al went on to say that he doesn’t think he can make the 75th. Not to worry, maybe not present in person, but most certainly in true Dartmouth fellowship and spirit.

Very sad news to report. I’ve received word of the passing of Winthrop “Win” Mayo. I was so taken aback—I thought Win would live forever! He and his dear wife, Ruth, were with us at so many reunions! I think if I were to remember Win it would be how spry he was, how intrigued and interested in what was happening and what was going to happen with his Dartmouth, and what a wonderful couple they were. He always looked about 19 with his crewcut. Win was born in Leominster, Massachusetts, and it appears he lived there all his life. Like all of you, he was an exemplary member of the class of 1938. To his children and their families, our deepest sympathy; he was a gallant man!

Stay well and enjoy the fall. And know that you are always in my thoughts and prayers.
