Class Note 1938
Yesterday I had a lovely time visiting with Francis Mooney and his daughter Norma Milne. Norma brought Francis up for a visit to the College before he headed down to Florida for the month of March to visit his sister. We had a great time looking at the 1938 Aegis, and he remembered various things such as visiting Tanzi’s Store, his good friend and roommate Jim Garvey and how good his grandfather had been in encouraging him to go to Dartmouth to study economics. Francis has a great sparkle in his eye and is so sharp! He was sorry that he missed the 70th reunion due to health issues, but hopes to see many classmates at the 75th!
I received this wonderful and uplifting e-mail from Jennifer Casey (director of class activities) at the College, who had the pleasure of meeting with Francis to talk about Dartmouth life and the good old days. Thank you so very much, Jennifer, for sharing this visit with us (and me!)—how wonderful that she is planning early for the 75th. Couldn’t ask for a better lead into the amazing 75th! You will be hearing more, but for now, please mark your calendars, make your doctors’ appointments and notify your families that you want to attend—and I guarantee you will all have a remarkable and unforgettable time renewing old friendships and making new ones. The date is September 27-29.
Thank you to the members of Win Mayo’sfamily who took the time to write me a note regarding Win—a truly memorable individual! Please know how touched I was to hear from you.
Received word of the passing of James Richard Yankauer of Sacramento, California, in December 2012. Jim was a radio writer at CBS and the Voice of America, WWII veteran and partial planner of the Normandy invasion. Jim covered the White House as a journalist during the Kennedy-Johnson presidencies and capped his career by teaching social studies at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, Maryland, and becoming a city councilman in retirement.
Stay well and bless you all!
