Charlie Kreter ’78

Charlie Kreter ’78 of Severna Park, Maryland, passed away on April 20 after an illness. Charlie came to Dartmouth from Massapequa, New York. He was a Phi Delt and a member of the wrestling team and took part in the French language study abroad program during the summer of 1976. Jack Manheimer ’78, who roomed with Charlie and Peter Balkin at 104 Hitchcock, recalls: “We were an unlikely threesome—a ‘Dead Head,’ a wrestler, and a student—but we made it work. Charlie was a vibrant, friendly, upbeat guy and an easy roommate.” Charlie went on to attend Tuck, graduating in 1980. He became general manager of Ellicott Machinery and later cofounded American Telecom Solutions. He was very active with the Alumni Council and served for many years as a class agent. He passed on his love of Dartmouth to his daughter, Elisabeth ’05. She survives him, along with his wife, Kelli, and son Alexander. “Charlie was intensely devoted to his family and his friends and his business,” recalls Greg Dougherty ’78. “He built and grew two very successful businesses and made a difference to everyone around him. I will miss his laugh, his high energy, and his generous spirit.”
