Dr. Richard Larson ’72, the director of the University of Chicago Hematologic Malignancies Clinical Research Program, has received the American Society of Hematology’s 2019 Henry M. Stratton Medal for his contributions to hematology research. His career has been focused on groundbreaking therapeutic trials, most recently treatments designed for adolescents and young adults with leukemia.

Mike Meehan ’72 has received the highest U.S. honor for volunteer service, the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Meehan has logged more than 4,500 hours of service to the Manatee County School District in Florida, primarily as boys soccer coach for 15 seasons at Palmetto High School.

Dr. Walter J. Curran Jr. ’73, an expert on lung cancer and brain tumors, earned a 2019 Gold Medal, the highest honor given by the American Society for Radiation Oncology. He is the executive director of the Emory University Winship Cancer Institute in Atlanta and led the merger of NRG Oncology, the largest of the five National Cancer Institute-funded clinical trials network groups.

Former women’s soccer team captain Myra Sack ’10—a first-team All-Ivy midfielder and second team All-Senior All-American—has been inducted into the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. She is currently the chief program officer for SquashBusters Inc., a Boston-based youth development organization that provides middle and high school students with academic tutoring and squash instruction.

San Francisco Recreation and Park Department GM Phil Ginsburg ’89 has been appointed to the California State Park and Recreation Commission, which oversees state park policies and recommends a comprehensive recreation policy for the state. He will continue to lead the San Francisco department, where he has helped raise more than $150 million in private donations to fund scholarships and renovate parks.

Brent Reidy ’05 has been named senior director of the New York Public Library’s new digital research division. He will oversee the digitization, preservation, access, and information policy for more than 27 million digitized and born-digital items. 

Owen Parsons ’08 has earned his second Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series as a member of the Last Week Tonight with John Oliver writing team. He also won in 2015 as a writer on The Daily Show.
