Hacked

Canvas, the online platform used on campus for course assignments and communication, was down for more than a day in May after a massive cyber attack. ShinyHunters, a criminal extortion group, claimed it attacked Canvas’ parent company, Instructure. Ransomware.live, which tracks ransomware groups’ activity, estimates the attack breached 275 million people’s data at nearly 9,000 schools.

News Tip

Matthew Garcia, professor of Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean studies, provided the tip that led to The New York Times’ recent investigation into Cesar Chavez, which found the labor leader sexually abused underage girls in the 1970s. The College has since renamed a fellowship named after Chavez.

Bench Boss

No surprise: Men’s hockey head coach Reid Cashman—who led the Big Green team to a program-record 23 wins, its first ECAC tournament championship, and its first appearance in the NCAA tournament since 1980—was named Division I Coach of the Year.

Aloha

The Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander heritage group Hōkūpa`a hosted its 30th annual lū’au on the Baker Library lawn in May. The event featured Pacific Islander performances, lei-making, and Hawaiian food. Among those performing was Faith Kealohapau’ole Paredes ’27 of Maui, who in April was crowned Hawaii’s Miss Aloha Hula.

How Sweet It ... Isn’t

Morphy, the College’s 23-year-old corpse flower (Amorphophallus titanum), bloomed for a few days in mid-May. Its smell is akin to the rotting flesh of dead animals (the better to attract pollinators such as flies and beetles that feed on carrion). Visitors who braved the stench in the Life Sciences Greenhouse saw the immense, ruffled cup-like flower that unfurled around the plant’s spectacular, 12-foot stalk.

Fired Up

Along with June’s Commencement speaker, comedian and actor Rachel Dratch ’88, and five other honorees, the College awarded an honorary degree to Greg Lukianoff, president and CEO of the nonprofit Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression. Last fall, FIRE ranked Dartmouth as the best Ivy League university for free speech.

A Centennial of Sound

Students, faculty, and Dartmouth Libraries staff presented “Baker Bells Festival”—two concerts of world-premiere compositions performed on the Baker Tower bells accompanied by live musicians. The bells were cast in 1926.

Tighter Rules

A new N.H. law requiring a government-issued ID to vote in the state eliminates the option for students to use student IDs at the polls. Proponents argue it will prevent voter fraud; critics contend it could be tough for students who don’t have a driver’s license to vote.

House Fest

Students celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the College’s house communities on the Green in May, with food trucks, games, music, and South House’s win of the year’s House Cup competition.

Back to Recruiting

Beta Alpha Omega fraternity and Alpha Phi sorority will participate in Inter-Fraternity and Inter-Sorority Council recruitment this fall for the first time since their 2024 suspensions in connection with alcohol and the drowning death of Beta member Won Jang ’26.
