William Henry Sharkey Jr. ’70

William Henry Sharkey Jr. ’70 died January 16 in Glencoe, Illinois, after a battle with lung cancer. “Chip” came to Dartmouth from Alexis I. DuPont High School in Wilmington, Delaware. At Dartmouth he was a math major, computer enthusiast, avid skier and social chairman of the Phoenix House, where he excelled in providing some of the best bands in upper New England. He spent the summer of 1968 in Paris observing the social upheaval at that time. Following graduation he joined the Connecticut General Life Insurance Co., later becoming Cigna, for the next 23 years. He completed its actuarial program and rapidly progressed through various management positions. He remained a member of the Society of Actuaries throughout his life. In 1994 he joined INA in Chicago as chief marketing officer and retired in 1999. During retirement he pursued one of his true passions by volunteering in the Glencoe Scouting program. He served as a parent volunteer for Cub Scouts, Cub master, assistant Boy Scoutmaster and Eagle Scout advisor. He also enjoyed playing golf, having won the Skokie Country Club Member/Member Tournament in 2003. He is survived by his wife, Pat, and children Bethany, Lucas and Elise.
