Stephen C. Lampl ’57 died on December 27, 2022, in Bentonville, Arkansas, surrounded by family. Steve graduated from Shaker Heights (Ohio) High School. At Dartmouth he majored in economics, was a member of Sigma Nu (president), and played tennis for four years. He started work in the family business, Lampl Fashions, a women’s sportswear company founded by his father and his uncle. Between 1957 and 1964 he served in the Ohio Air National Guard. In 1962, upon the unexpected passing of his father and his uncle, Steve became president of Lampl Fashions at age 26. He successfully ran the company with six manufacturing facilities, employing close to 1,000 people. Selling the business, he relocated to Virginia Beach, Virginia, where he joined Guest Quarters, the first all-suite hotel business. He became president of Virginia Stage Co. renovating a downtown building into a repertory theater. In 1991 Steve retired and took up painting. His signature acrylic still lifes depicted floral arrangements in vivid colors. He sold more than 150 paintings. He moved to Waynesville, North Carolina, in 2001 and started an arts co-op in 2007, leasing a storefront where he and 30 artists showed their works. Steve served Dartmouth as class newsletter editor, on the class executive committee, and as alumni fund agent. He played championship tennis and recreational golf throughout his life. He loved casting his fishing line along Virginia Beach and in the Florida Keys. He is survived by Sandy, his wife of 40 years; children Elizabeth, Cathleen, and Christopher; and grandchildren.
