John P. Zipser ’60

John P. Zipser ’60 of Savannah, Georgia, died on October 27, 2013, under the care of Hospice Savannah. He was born in New York City on January 22, 1939, and grew up and was educated in the city until his matriculation to Dartmouth in the fall of 1956. While at Dartmouth he spent his junior year in Paris, where he became fluent in French and became a true Francophile, having developed a deep love and appreciation for French culture. After Dartmouth he worked as an investment counselor and later a founding partner of the investment firm of Mack, Bushnell and Edelman in New York City. In addition he and several partners operated a very popular restaurant in Bedford, New York. Thereafter he obtained a master’s in social work from Fordham University and became a psychiatric social worker for Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Litchfield, Connecticut. He retired from this post in 1999 and in 2000 moved to Savannah, where he worked as a real estate agent until his final illness. John was a member of the Oglethorpe, an active member of Christ Church Episcopal in Savannah and is a past member of the Chatham Club. John is survived by his wife of many years, Mary; daughter Melissa and her husband, Thomas; daughter Katherine and her husband, Hew; brother Douglas; and five grandchildren. Funeral services were held on November 2 at Christ Church Episcopal. Memorials may be made to Hospice Savannah.
