John Houstoun MacIntosh Clinch Jr. ’56

John Houstoun MacIntosh Clinch Jr. ’56 died September 24, 2010, at home in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts, after a brief battle with melanoma. Born in Evanston, Illinois, he graduated from Dartmouth and Tuck Business School, married Deborah Robertson and then served as a naval officer. Following his time in the service they lived in Cleveland, Ohio, and then moved to Winnetka, Illinois, where they raised their three children. South Dartmouth became the place for summering. Howie worked professionally as a banking consultant and an active community member. He helped start the New Trier Township peer jury program and served as commissioner for the Winnetka Park District. He retired in 2001 and moved permanently to South Dartmouth, where he helped start the Youth Court in New Bedford and was active in the Smiles Mentor Program. Howie also served as a board member and treasurer for the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust. His infectious zest for life kept him busy sailing, gardening and spending time with family and his many friends. He was also an active member of the Congregational Church of South Dartmouth. He was predeceased by Deborah. He is survived by his second wife, Kathleen, whom he married on August 7, 2010; children Bradford, J. Houstoun III and Louisa; daughter-in-law Diana; son-in-law Jason; grandchildren Daniel, Sarah and Abigail; step-daughters Kristin and Sharyn and their husbands, Michael and Scott; and stepchildren Chase, Greer and Maggie; sister Frances and her husband, Gordon; and many nieces and nephews.
