Alton Voorhees Thorpe ’40 of Sebring, Florida, died June 30, 2009, at age 92. Al came to Dartmouth from Kingston (New York) High School, majored in chemistry and was a member of the Chess Club. During WW II he was a research chemist and managed a plant for the Manhattan district for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to produce classified chemicals; he was later in personnel administration. His Dartmouth service included interviewing candidates for the College and serving as class secretary from 2004 to 2009. Al is survived by his wife, Carol, children Peter and Susan and brother Merle ’51.
